Black Rock - Digital art performance

Black rock

This was a digital art performance that I visited within the uni of leeds stage, it showed me a side of graphic design I had never even considered before. The whole "experience" felt extremely well curated from the music to the lighting even the printed materials that accompanied it all felt beautifully crafted. This was a super interesting look at visual, sound and stage design.

Henri Texier - EFG Jazz Fest - Inspiration

Henri Texier

As part of the EFG Jazz festival I went to listen to Henri Texier I feel this relates to my practice because of how inspiring I find the music. I think that attending performances within all of part of the creative industry for me is a big part of finding inspirations even if this means ideas bubbling up during them or them subconsciously simmering away only to appear within the coming week.

Basquiat: Boom for Real - Barbican Visit

Basquiat: Boom for Real

Today I visited the Barbican to see the bastquet exhibition. I drew a lot of inspiration from this sense of a movement that was happening in 80s New York. Groups of artists coming together sharing ideas and creating together is something I think is very liberating for individual creatives. It made me with wether cultural movements still happen today? Because I feel like they must but I’m unaware of them.

What stood out to me in the exhibition was bastwuits rhetoric and knowledge of arts history. His knowledge seemed to be a huge influence to inform his art. His rehoric was shown clearly through his note pad writing.

His postcards were also brilliant creating an a4 piece then photo coping them to be cut into four postcards. I find exhibitions a great way to refresh my mindset and get idea of what is happening. Basquiat has been someone who I have been interested in ever since watching a documentary on him. I find his art interesting and full of antidotes which are subjective

You've got (real) mail - Steve Hocket

You've got (real) mail

I found this task very useful because it really got me thinking about who I wanted to get in contact with and why. This lead to me brainstorming for two people. Templo studios founder pali pavalanah and Steve Hockett as my ideas weren't quite there for pali I stuck with steve.

My reason for getting in touch with Steve was to create a connection for my dissertation and also to visit The Engine Room in Manchester. Steve runs a low-quality journalism cycling called TCOD.

From the research, I saw his style was very anti-aesthetic for this reason I put something together to look very DIY. My final outcome played with words and signifiers. By placing his gif into a matchbox I aimed to make a comment on his work through the popular term It's Lit.

I then presented this to the class which was good for presentation skills. overall a really nice task just because it got me doing stuff.

I got a response from steve that said to shoot him and email next month to find a date I could go visit as he was super busy at the moment.

Collab: Study Task 01

My reason for partaking in collaborate project was to further my skills in working as a team. It is also a chance to give me insight into how other disciplines work. By combining a range of skills from different areas there is more possibility for bigger and better ideas. We will communicate mainly through regular meeting and group messager. Face to face is a much more productive way to explore ideas together whereas messager is much easier when we arent all around.

I will be working with elliot from graphic design, ruby from illustration and charlotte from illustration. Each of us will have our own ways to approach the brief something we can use to our advantage with the aim to use all of our skills together to produce something with depth and possible innovation.

DISOBEDIENT BODIES: JW ANDERSON CURATES THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD

An exhibition opening we visited. This was a very inspirational event with lots of out the box thinking.

Punk Exhibition Village book store

A punk exhibition I visited which helped inform my Cop Module.

Interview Layout Ideas

For the layout, I experimented with the scanner a method I learnt from my previous module. This was informed by Josh's style which is largely based on distortions and manipulation of digital methods such as glitch animations.  So I had the idea to put the interview through a digital platform befor I laser cut it to create a layout informed by Josh's design practice however I decided against this after peer feedback suggested it would be very difficult to read. My final layout uses a very standard but appropriate layout.

Interview wooden Plaque

This piece was my interview with josh millgate laser cut into a block of wood. The piece was informed from the interview itself and Josh's advice for me to utilise universities equipment to the best of my ability. So I got a hand from Joe on how to use the laser cutter and took Josh's advice. This piece it to show how I can take and use insights from my chosen creative to produce interesting and well informed designs. The layout of the piece is created to be aligned left to right for maximum readability I experimented with manipulation of text to fit Millgates design style but decided against this as legibility and readability began to fall. However this design still falls down when it comes to read and legibility, as the typeface is rastered into the wood legibility becomes slightly reduced because the outlines are not as sharp as they could be. In the future I would allow the laser cutter to go over the piece twice, I have been informed this is how you can over come this issue or maybe create a press to print the interview off. When it came to photographing the interview I had an issue with the text being properly visible within the photos. I tryed out a number of location to find the best backdrop because I was planning to break my other piece I wanted to find somewhere that was suitable. The most suitable spots seemed to be outside.
