D&AD Third Day - Volunteering
Third Day
Today at D&AD IT WAS a little QUIETER I ended up really enjoying my time here it hardly left like work and was super nice meeting people outside of my bubble. I met some nice people from shift today as well as getting to chat with Craig Oldham the only talker to actually speak to us on his way into the stage. His talk for me was super inspirational his emphasis on ideas and not kerning for me really rang true and made me feel a little less worried about not having a style/craft. His talk made me want to just explore things I am interested in without comparing it to what’s happening which is really difficult to be honest. When you can Instagram or Behance feeding you the ‘coolest’ work it’s hard not to be inspired by it but this is something I am going to keep track of. Hi Craig,

I met you yesterday at D&AD, the lad from Leeds art uni who's tutor is Alec. I really appreciated your talk yesterday, Its great to hear someone saying it how it is! Also, you successfully plugged your book because I found myself buying it this morning.
I wanted to ask if I and a friend could possibly come down to your studio for a visit and maybe shadow you for the day. It would be great to get a better insight of how you work and run things. We finish on the 14th of may so any day you might be free after this date would be completely awesome.
Cheers
Jon
D&AD Second Day - Volunteering
Second Day
This was my first day working, I had to man the doors of a stage for the day. I actually really enjoyed myself because I met a lot of interesting people also volunteering. The whole thing is really tiring though and at times just badly organised but I was happy to just go with it. I managed to speak to Ollie from superimposed studio about there Murrow culture project and about a possible day or two shadowing them to get an idea of how they work. I also met a film director and art space business owner who agreed to have a look at my portfolio for me and told me to get in contact with factory 15. I met a lady from Switzerland who was studying a masters in Ravensbourne it was nice to get her perspective on the industry and how she found herself back studying. I met some Lua students also I’ve learnt that I do actually need a business card. That I should not take myself to seriously as this really comes across not always in the best way. Networking can be fun. That life is not entirely about finding a job and to be easier on myself when not always approaching someone I felt like I should have. I do think that d&ad should pay for our travel expenses
Getting in contact will Ollie was something I aimed to achieve from the start of the year.
A follow up email trying to find some more placements
D&AD First Day - Volunteering
Note from the first day
The crazy contrast between last two talks The first day at D&Ad was good easy start as I had a day off. Talks wise it began with Weidner and Wendy working on Instagram stories which I loved this talk was a super nice example of really capturing to there audience and having fun in the process. It felt really positive as well like they were giving people the tools to become creators which I loved. I really enjoy impossible foods and gave me hope for the future which was really refreshing. Sasha Markova aims and ambitions are something I would like to be apart of it felt cutting edge and innovative. Which was very interesting when contrasted with Dave Trott who spoke as if we were still in the 60 he would constantly generalise and he was very dog eat dog world. However, he was clearly a well-established designer and good at what he does and he had some really nice insights such as finding new perspectives on your research or finding what makes you different. I just really didn’t appreciate his attitude I’m bored of it and It irritates me that so many people are still lapping up this arrogant over the top masculinity that to take away from the speakers who actually want to get more from their talks than just an ego boost. However, the conference finished with Debbie milkman which was an excellent super inspirational lady who just reels you in. In terms of networking, I met a few students from Bournemouth on graphic design, a freelancer and a creative duo. I spent most the time with the students it was interesting to hear about what they were working on. Their course was run differently with just one major project which to me feels really strange as this is not how the industry will be.Friday, 27 April 2018
Self Branding Research & Idea Development
To begin this I looked for a typeface which could be used throughout the brand.
I took forward Nimbus Sans and Termina both had some character whilst still being really legible and easy to apply.
I decided to use a smiley face as my icon for two reason one is It instantly gives the person your handing it to good vibes and it makes the business card a little less formal. All these are subconiously telling the person reading my business card they this person is positive, happy and enfusiactic all things you want a client to think.
When testing these out on a print I found that lots of the faces created a tacky and childish feel where as good set type and the icon along worked really nicely. I extend this I think I would get the icon made as a stamp to give business cards a hand touch and more variation.
Colour wise I decided to go with Green because this instantly signifies go! Which paired with the smiley icon will help win over clients. And if it doesnt then maybe they arnt the right people.
Feedback
Luke: Said the idea is nice especially because if you use a stamp depending on your mood could be how many times you stamp the cards. However, he said the smiley icon itself needs some work so have a play around with it.

While working at the elephant room me and Elliott spent some time with Will who is a cultural strategist at the elephant room. He gave us alot of articles to read and his own personal insight on the topic.

The impact of this project made me have some thoughts on how our platform could create identities for people to rally behind. For example, if you had 5 charities and 100 people who all were supporting a particular disease. Could our platform organise them all together and then constantly feedback whats happening within this community.
