Collab: Study Task 01

My reason for partaking in collaborate project was to further my skills in working as a team. It is also a chance to give me insight into how other disciplines work. By combining a range of skills from different areas there is more possibility for bigger and better ideas. We will communicate mainly through regular meeting and group messager. Face to face is a much more productive way to explore ideas together whereas messager is much easier when we arent all around.

I will be working with elliot from graphic design, ruby from illustration and charlotte from illustration. Each of us will have our own ways to approach the brief something we can use to our advantage with the aim to use all of our skills together to produce something with depth and possible innovation.

DISOBEDIENT BODIES: JW ANDERSON CURATES THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD

An exhibition opening we visited. This was a very inspirational event with lots of out the box thinking.

Punk Exhibition Village book store

A punk exhibition I visited which helped inform my Cop Module.

Interview Layout Ideas

For the layout, I experimented with the scanner a method I learnt from my previous module. This was informed by Josh's style which is largely based on distortions and manipulation of digital methods such as glitch animations.  So I had the idea to put the interview through a digital platform befor I laser cut it to create a layout informed by Josh's design practice however I decided against this after peer feedback suggested it would be very difficult to read. My final layout uses a very standard but appropriate layout.

Interview wooden Plaque

This piece was my interview with josh millgate laser cut into a block of wood. The piece was informed from the interview itself and Josh's advice for me to utilise universities equipment to the best of my ability. So I got a hand from Joe on how to use the laser cutter and took Josh's advice. This piece it to show how I can take and use insights from my chosen creative to produce interesting and well informed designs. The layout of the piece is created to be aligned left to right for maximum readability I experimented with manipulation of text to fit Millgates design style but decided against this as legibility and readability began to fall. However this design still falls down when it comes to read and legibility, as the typeface is rastered into the wood legibility becomes slightly reduced because the outlines are not as sharp as they could be. In the future I would allow the laser cutter to go over the piece twice, I have been informed this is how you can over come this issue or maybe create a press to print the interview off. When it came to photographing the interview I had an issue with the text being properly visible within the photos. I tryed out a number of location to find the best backdrop because I was planning to break my other piece I wanted to find somewhere that was suitable. The most suitable spots seemed to be outside.

505 SB1 Evaluation

SB1 I enjoyed alot, it made me realise my appreciation for creating from a practical process over digital means. I learnt a huge amount about my chosen process within the dark room and saw my understanding of photograms progress over the period of time working on them. Understanding how this works now can be helpfull for future projects I may want to experiment with this.

Collab Evaluation

Collaborating taught me about working within a team a skill I can take with me into the industry. It opened my eyes to the idea of collaboration and the benefits of working with others. I want to based my work around much more collaboration briefs within 3rd year. I find it much more enjoyable working along side peers, I found it really changes the tone. I become much less critical and open to ideas as Im more relax that the project will get finished. I feel work produced within a group has a unique mix match of skills you cannot achieve solo.

Josh Millgate Interview practical

This is the quote and advice that I used as an influence for my practical piece. I am very happy with out it turned out it's been an interesting and fun project to experiment with. With the help of Matthews and wheatley, we set up a camera I rented from the uni and a iphone 7. The iphone 7 shot the video in slo-mo and the camera was for higher res photos. We found a location which was most suitable and looked raw and dirty, To contrast the condition of the shiny acrylic plastic. This idea of smashing up the plastic to re-piece it back together was informed through the interview with Josh. I plan to put possibly frame the pieces and send it over to Josh as a thank you. Below is the photo shoot of the set.

Cop End of module Evaluation

Cop is a module I struggle with as my writing skills suffer due to me being dyslexic. However it is fundamental that my practice essay writing through this module to enhance my writing and reading skills for the future. After this module I felt that I had for certain achieved this. It also preferred for dissertation. I learnt a large amount from my research topic such as subcultures, anarchy theory and protest which has informed and influenced some of my projects since. The lesson I learn from picking such a vague topic most importantly was that it is best to be specific as when the questions and topic are left to vague it can result in a project which struggles to resolve the original issue. Narrowing down to a more specific section in both cop and my design practise allows for much more in-depth research. Which often means achieving a much more relevant end piece to my audience. in the future I will spend more time understanding my brief and audience better, something i wish to implement into 505 studio brief 2. Another important aspect of this breif I missed out was primary research something I will be focusing on much more in the begging of my projects.

PPP End of module evaluation

End of Module Evaluation

Reflecting back over PPP it has been an interesting module, I enjoyed it much more this year than last. Because I feel it is difficult to self-brand while still trying to figure out what kind of designer I am. It seems much more beneficial getting into contact with professionals.  However I did find this interaction with professionals unverving to at the begining of the brief, not knowing where to start. Now i have begun to get in touch with creatives I will aim to keep this up from now on in an attempt to build up my networking  skills. I have found the more I practice or put myself out there the easier these things become over time. Last year, for example, I found the presentations very nerve racking whereas this year It was much less, I found this positive an evidence of my progression within the second year. Overall I feel the skills learnt in this module ar very relevant and necessary to my development into the industry. I also learnt how to use the laser cuter for future projects.

Studio Brief 1 - This Brief has alowed me to watch my practice and evaluate what I am doing wrong and doing right which alows me to enhance my design practice.

Studio Brief 2 - Has allowed me to gain more courage when it comes to interacting with professionals. In the future I would make sure I sent out more hand written work to professionals as after speaking to peers this seemed to be the most successful means of communication.

Studio Breif 3 - From this Brief I learn alot about working with other professionals. S.O.D alowed me to enhance my networking skills and possible create much more meaningful work to me.

Planning and photographing.

Trying to figure out where and how to break the piece I want to shoot it all in one place. With maybe the final pieces reshot in a studio. I am thinking outside has an interesting texture and is most suitable for a place where I could break the poster, with a before and after.

Learning to use the laser cutter

For my Interview practical, I decided to take advice from the interview and go use something I haven't before and learn a new piece of equipment. Yesterday I spent the day in the woodwork room using the laser cutter. I learnt how to use the software ethos within this there are multi cutting settings I learnt to use cut out, raster and outline. The advantages of me learning this new technique are I can now apply it to new projects, it gives me a new outlet to experiment with. I also am more familiar with the staff in this area which is helpfull for the future.

Josh Millgate interview taken lite

Final Piece

So after speaking to ed about issues I was having on 505 studio brief 1 poster, there was something he mentioned that stuck with me. He was giving advice on how he likes to find inspiration or influence one method was to take what has been said and make it literally. So when i was going through my interview one quote stood out to me the most. Mainly because I feel it rings very true and its something I have been trying to do much more of this year. Evidence of this would be projects in the dark room, having ago and spinning and now learning how to use the laser cutter. The quote was 'utilise everything in your environment as a student, use everything your university has to offer even if you dont know why you are doing it, go print something on the 3d printer, laser cut your logo into a block of wood and then break it into pieces just for the hell of it" So that is what I've done, i have utilised the equipment he have here. I spent all day learning how to use the laser cutter with the help of joe, i would now feel confident I could use this process in future work. This really helps my practice grow as I can start to think more outside of the pc.

Ive rented out a camera for filming and photo graphs at this moment in time the plan is to freeze the plastic and then smash in on the floor. I think i may keep the wood undamaged for legibility but if I can find an axe or something maybe I will video that.
